The Foundation of Physical Security
Every security system has layers. Cameras watch. Alarms alert. Access control restricts entry. But the perimeter fence is the first physical barrier, the line that defines inside from outside, authorized from unauthorized, controlled from uncontrolled.
A fence does more than mark boundaries. It delays intrusion, channels traffic to controlled entry points, creates standoff distance for detection systems, and establishes legal notice of private property. These functions matter whether the site is a warehouse, a school, or a residence.
We approach fence and gate projects as security systems, not just construction projects. Material selection, height, anti-climb features, gate placement, and integration points all affect how well the perimeter performs its security function.
Material Selection for Purpose
Different applications demand different materials. Chain link provides economical, durable perimeter definition with options for privacy and security enhancement. Ornamental steel and aluminum deliver architectural presence with genuine security. Welded wire and palisade systems offer anti-climb protection without the institutional look of chain link.
Material choice involves trade-offs. Chain link costs less but may not fit architectural requirements. Ornamental fencing looks better but costs more and may require more maintenance. Welded mesh offers excellent security but limited aesthetic options. We help clients understand these trade-offs and select materials that fit both requirements and budget.
Environmental factors influence material selection. Coastal sites need corrosion-resistant materials. High-wind areas need robust post spacing and anchoring. Sites with appearance requirements need materials and finishes that meet aesthetic standards. We consider all these factors during design.
- Chain link: economical, durable, versatile enhancement options
- Ornamental steel: security with architectural presence
- Ornamental aluminum: corrosion resistance, lighter weight
- Welded wire mesh: high security, clean appearance
- Palisade: maximum anti-climb, industrial applications
Gates as Controlled Entry Points
Fences define the perimeter; gates control who crosses it. Gate design, placement, and operation determine how effectively the perimeter channels traffic while allowing authorized access. A good fence with poor gates fails its security function.
Gate types serve different purposes. Slide gates handle high traffic and wide openings. Swing gates suit narrower openings and lower traffic. Cantilever gates eliminate ground track for rough terrain or snow. Vertical pivot gates minimize footprint. Pedestrian gates provide man-door access without opening vehicle gates.
Every gate is a potential security vulnerability. We design gates with security in mind, proper sizing, appropriate hardware, automation preparation, and integration points for access control. Gates built without these considerations often require expensive retrofits.
In-House Fabrication Advantage
We fabricate gates and custom components in our own shop. This control over fabrication means control over quality, schedule, and the details that determine long-term performance.
Standard catalog gates rarely fit perfectly. Openings are not standard sizes. Terrain is not level. Integration requirements vary. Custom fabrication addresses these realities. Gates fit their openings. Hardware aligns properly. Automation prep matches specified equipment.
Our powder coating line finishes fabricated components with durable, consistent color. No waiting for outside coating services. No shipping damage between fabrication and finishing. Components leave our shop ready to install.
Installation Quality
Fence installation is not unskilled labor. Post depth, spacing, and alignment determine structural performance. Fabric tension affects appearance and longevity. Gate installation requires precision that determines whether gates operate smoothly or bind and drag.
We handle site conditions as we find them. Rock, roots, utilities, grade changes, and existing structures all complicate installation. Experienced installers adapt to conditions without compromising quality. Less experienced installers create problems that persist for the life of the fence.
Permits and Compliance
Fence permits vary by jurisdiction. Some cities require permits for all fences. Others only regulate height or location. Most require permits for powered gates. We know local requirements and handle permit applications as part of our scope.
Code compliance extends beyond permits. Setback requirements affect fence placement. Height limits restrict design options. Visibility triangles at intersections may require adjustments. Pool enclosure codes specify hardware and self-closing requirements. We design with these requirements in mind.
Fire department access is often overlooked until it becomes a problem. Gated properties must provide fire department access, usually Knox boxes or key switches. Fire lanes must remain accessible. We coordinate with fire marshals when required and ensure installations meet access requirements.
Integration and Future-Proofing
Fences and gates rarely stand alone. They connect to buildings, interface with access control, integrate with camera systems, and coordinate with lighting. We design with integration in mind, providing conduit paths, mounting provisions, and coordination points.
Technology changes faster than fences wear out. Gates installed today may need different access control in five years. We build in flexibility, conduit capacity for future wiring, structural provisions for equipment mounting, and gate construction that accommodates operator upgrades.
Documentation supports future work. As-built drawings show what was installed. Equipment specifications identify components. Maintenance records track service history. This documentation has value for the life of the installation.
Statewide Service Area
We serve commercial, industrial, and residential properties throughout Washington State. From Seattle and Tacoma to Spokane and Walla Walla, we provide full-service support from initial consultation through installation and ongoing maintenance.
Local presence means responsive service. We know local codes, have relationships with permitting offices, and can respond quickly when issues arise. We are not a national company dispatching crews from distant locations.
Our shop location provides efficient service across the region. Fabrication happens locally. Materials stage at our facility. Crews deploy from a central location with reasonable travel to most job sites. This efficiency translates to competitive pricing and reliable scheduling.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a commercial fence installation take?
It depends on scope. A straightforward chain link perimeter of a few hundred feet typically takes a few days. Complex projects with multiple gate locations, ornamental materials, and integration requirements may take weeks. We provide project-specific timelines during estimation.
Do you handle permits or is that my responsibility?
We handle permit applications as part of our standard scope for commercial and industrial projects. We prepare applications, submit to the jurisdiction, and coordinate inspections. Permit fees are typically passed through at cost.
What warranty do you provide?
For new installations, we provide a three-year workmanship and labor warranty. For service and repair work, we provide a one-year workmanship warranty and 30-day labor warranty. Materials are covered by manufacturer warranties. See our full warranty policy for details.
Can you match existing fencing on my property?
Usually yes. We can match most fence types and colors, though exact matches to aged materials may not be possible. We assess existing fencing during site visits and advise on matching options. Sometimes phased replacement makes more sense than attempting to match deteriorated materials.
Do you provide maintenance services after installation?
Yes. We offer maintenance agreements and respond to service calls. Gates especially benefit from regular maintenance, lubrication, adjustment, and inspection extend equipment life and prevent failures. We can establish maintenance schedules appropriate to usage and equipment.
